But Livorno is more than just a beach town\u2014it\u2019s a busy <strong>port city<\/strong> and has been since the second half of the 16th century, when the powers-that-were\u00a0decided to transform this <strong>fishermen\u2019s village, built around the Tower of Matilda of Tuscany<\/strong>, into one of <strong>Europe\u2019s main ports<\/strong>\u2014largely for the <strong>military and commercial purposes of the Medici<\/strong>. While it\u2019s now well-known all throughout the Mediterranean, the port developed over time thanks to\u00a0contributions from various cultures\u2014the \u201cNations of Livorno\u201d, one might call them. You can still find traces of these \u201cNations\u201d in the city\u2019s houses of worship, cemeteries, archives and gastronomic traditions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Guarding the port is the <strong>Old Fortress<\/strong> (Fortezza Vecchia), where the impressive <strong>Tower of Matilda <\/strong>also stands, joined by <strong>waterways <\/strong>to the <strong>New Fortress <\/strong>(Fortezza Nuova), the heart of the city center.<\/p>\n<p>Skimmed as it is by the sea\u2014which, through various canals, ripples into the oldest neighborhoods of the city\u2014Livorno has the <strong>unique charm of a Tuscan city with a Mediterranean vibe<\/strong>. Its history, culture, flaming sunsets, clear, scented air, nautical sports and food traditions all circle back to the sea. Europe\u2019s <strong>very first beachfront bathing establishments <\/strong>appeared here in the 19th century, and along with those came the very idea of a \u201cnautical\u201d vacation.<\/p>\n<p>To best explore the birth city of Pitro Mascagni, Giovanni Fatori, Amedeo Modigliani and Giorgio Caproni, follow the inspiration\u00a0that its various locations, sounds and colors create. One of the most intriguing routes to take will bring you through an area that many call <strong>\u201cpiccolo Venezia\u201d, or little Venice<\/strong>, a route of <strong>canals to traverse via boat<\/strong>, which leads to some of the Renaissance structures and areas in the center of the city. Then there\u2019s the <strong>Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum<\/strong>, where you can admire works by 19<sup>th<\/sup> and early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century Tuscan painters; plus the <strong>Mascagnano Museum<\/strong>, dedicated to music and housed in the historic Teatro Goldoni. Don\u2019t miss the chance to explore those previously mentioned \u201cNations\u201d that populated Livorno, beginning with the <strong>\u201cYeshiv\u00e0 Marini\u201d Jewish Museum <\/strong>in the San Ranieri Oratory, followed by the <strong>Museo di Santa Giulia, <\/strong>housed in the Chiesa degli Armeni. Anyone wanting to explore the sea treasures shouldn\u2019t skip a visit to the <strong>Mediterranean Museum of Natural History <\/strong>at <strong>Villa Henderson<\/strong>, which combines old relics and finds with a super-modern educational track through the museum. Then, see living examples of Mediterranean fauna in the tanks at the <strong>Diacinto Cestoni Aquarium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can call it a day after a stroll through the <strong>Liberty style villas <\/strong>and eclectic structures in the <strong>Ardenza neighborhood<\/strong>, which is just behind the seafront.
